There was once a time long before any mortal can recall when there were powers who ruled above us. They were the Gods and Goddesses who ruled on high and were beloved by their worshipers.
To every province and land there were beings that helped and nurtured human life from it’s infancy to the dawn of knowledge and written language among mortals. Each culture had their Deities from the Mayans and Aztecs to the Greeks and Romans, all the way down to the Nordic Vikings. For centuries everything was relatively peaceful and serene among the peoples of Earth, but the comfort and luxury made the humans proud and arrogant. They began to question their needs for the so called ‘Gods’. That’s when the chaos started.
In every corner of the earth the worshipers of Gods began to rebel and curse their benefactors. Tearing down monuments, burning temples and ceasing their sacrifices man rebelled. The blood ceased to flow from alters. The fruits and harvest bearings were no longer offered. No incense were lit, neither were prayers offered. The human race had come to the sweeping decision that they no longer needed their Gods. The discord and content swept through man-kind like a plague.
Cursing humanity and no longer having a place in our world, the deities pooled their strength to create another. This realm was the mirror image of the one inhabited by humans in almost every way and they slowly began to populate it with the stolen peoples of our world. The Gods however chose to belong to different peoples and split the lands as they saw fit.
Cultures and peoples were crossed, the Egyptian Gods ruled over parts of what we came to know as Africa and China on Earth and the divisions were as such. Not random but not normal by earth standard. They decided to call this new world Thrae.
As time passed the gods went from reality to legend. Some even began to take other names. They were now called Demons and Angels, but most faded into legend. Obviously, it cannot be said that every of these powerful beings used their powers for good. And even in this new realm there was a sort of hierarchy among the deities. There were rules and the punishment for breaking them was more than severe.
One such Goddess who had fled to Thrae was Astarte. In Greece she was known as Aphrodite, Goddess of fertility and love. The rebellion among man hit her particularly hard as she had done nothing but bring love, offspring and happiness to her worshipers. At least that was how she viewed it. She tried endlessly to comprehend why they had rejected her so. Why she, the most beautiful and benevolent of all, could be cast away. She had not taken the time to actually analyze her past actions or her vanity. No she simply obsessed over her rejection to the point of insanity. Over the years it drove her to madness and it twisted her heart and her moral compass.
Her reason, logic, and sense of honor were blackened by obsession, insecurity and self-delusion. Where she once gave life, now she took away the possibility for creation and employed dark gods and evil underlings to do her biding. She thought herself above them, and thought she was justified in her actions. “Through the death, chaos and tragedy they will know true love and true life” This was her new creed and she would make them see.. They would all see.
To be sure I give credit where credit is due I came up with the idea for the characters myself however; however the world is loosely based off of the plot for a series called Everworld by K.A.Applegate.
